Matthew A. Williams

For over 15 years, Matthew Williams has been a trial attorney on tax litigation, toxic tort, professional liability, environmental, insurance, product liability, and other complex general liability matters. He has successfully tried several cases, including multiple jury trials.

Prior to joining Clapp, Moroney, Matt worked for a boutique firm in San Francisco focusing on tax controversy, corporate restructuring, and regulatory compliance. Before that, he worked for the Office of Chief Counsel, Department of Treasury handling civil and criminal tax case, and he was an associate at an AmLaw 100 law firm in Los Angeles handling toxic tort, environmental, product liability and insurance defense. Matt started his career as a Lieutenant in the Navy JAG Corps, defending toxic tort, environmental, professional liability, and criminal cases. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star.

Matt is experienced in complex civil litigation and dispute resolution. He has negotiated on behalf of multiple corporate and individual clients often facing millions in liability, consistently settling for a small fraction of their exposure, and even zero liability in some cases. Among his published opinions is Thrifty Oil & Subsidiaries v. Commissioner, 139 T.C. 6 (2012), a Federal Court decision regarding environmental remediation expenses.

He received his B.S. from Towson State University, magna cum laude, in 1997, where he was inducted into the Golden Key National Honour Society. He received his J.D. from Widener University, School of Law, magna cum laude, in 2001, where he was named to the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society and received an American Jurisprudence Award for the subject of Torts. Matt received his LL.M. from The George Washington University, School of Law, with highest honors, in 2005. He is a member of the California Bar and Pennsylvania Bar (inactive), as well as the American Bar Association. He has volunteered as a judge for mock trial competitions at Golden Gate University, School of Law. He also received the Bet Tzedek Access To Justice Award for his work with the Holocaust Survivors Justice Network..
